Master the evolution system: learn mechanics, unlock requirements, strategic timing, and advanced fusion chains

Last Updated: October 30, 2025

What Are Evolutions?

Evolutions are powerful upgraded balls created by combining two Level 3 balls together, resulting in a new ball with enhanced abilities, increased damage multipliers, and unique effects. These transformations are the cornerstone of Ball x Pit's progression system, turning your basic arsenal into devastating weapons.

Evolutions dramatically increase your combat effectiveness with damage multipliers ranging from 1.5x to 4.0x, area-of-effect abilities, and special mechanics like lifesteal, crowd control, and ball multiplication. Creating evolutions is essential for progressing through harder biomes, defeating bosses, and unlocking advanced game content.

Understanding the Evolution Chamber

The Evolution Chamber is a mid-game building that enhances your fusion capabilities. To unlock it, you must first create 10 evolutions across your runs, demonstrating mastery of the basic evolution system.

Building Costs:

  • • 100 Wood
  • • 80 Stone
  • • 200 Gold
  • • 50 Wheat

Requirements:

  • • Create 10 total evolutions
  • • Category: Upgrade
  • • Effect: Fusion mechanics enhancement

While the exact effect is still being verified by the community, the building is categorized as an "Upgrade" and is related to fusion mechanics, suggesting it may improve evolution success rates, reduce cooldowns, or provide additional evolution-related benefits.

Step-by-Step Fusion Process

The evolution process follows a specific mechanical sequence that every player must understand:

1️⃣

Level Your Balls

Each ball type has its own experience level, gaining XP through combat. You must level any two different balls to Level 3. The fastest way to gain XP is using The Warrior character, whose passive ability dramatically increases ball leveling speed.

2️⃣

Wait for the Rainbow Orb

Once you have two balls at Level 3, a rainbow orb will appear during gameplay. This special orb is the trigger mechanism for evolutions—collect it to activate the evolution interface.

💡 Tip: Rainbow orbs appear as XP level-up rewards. Make sure you're actively leveling balls to trigger them.
3️⃣

Select Evolution or Fusion

After collecting the rainbow orb, you'll be presented with a choice between "Evolution" and "Fusion". This is where the terminology becomes crucial (explained in the next section). For your first evolution, select "Evolution" and choose your two Level 3 balls to combine.

💡

Example: Creating Bomb

To create the Bomb evolution (one of the most recommended first evolutions), level both Burn and Iron to Level 3. When the rainbow orb appears, collect it, select "Evolution", and combine Burn + Iron to create Bomb, which deals 150-300 AoE damage with a 2.0x damage multiplier.

⭐ Advanced Multi-Step Evolutions

Some evolutions require multiple steps and careful planning. These ultimate-tier evolutions are achievement-tied and represent the pinnacle of the fusion system:

Evolution vs Fusion Terminology

The game makes a distinction between "Evolution" and "Fusion", though both use the same rainbow orb trigger:

🧪 Evolution

Refers to combining two different basic balls (like Burn + Iron = Bomb). This creates your first-generation evolved balls and is what you'll primarily do early game.

Example: Burn + Iron → Bomb

⚗️ Fusion

Refers to combining two balls that are already evolutions themselves. For example, if you create Bomb (an evolution), level it to 3, then combine it with another evolved ball like Poison that's also Level 3, you're performing a "fusion".

Example: Bomb + Poison → Nuclear Bomb (fusing two evolutions)

Note: Both processes use the same interface and rainbow orb mechanic—the distinction is purely about what types of balls you're combining. The achievement "Fusion Evolution" specifically requires you to "fuse two evolutions together", creating a hybrid evolution with combined properties.

When to Evolve: Strategic Timing

✅ Early Game Priority

Timing your evolutions correctly can make or break a run. Rush your first evolution as early as possible—ideally before completing the first biome. S-tier evolutions like Bomb, Magma, Blizzard, or Sandstorm provide massive power spikes that trivialize early content.

💡 Tip: Get "Bomb or Magma evolution before boss" for the first boss fight against the Skeleton King (Liminal Desert achievement tip).

⚠️ Strategic Saving

However, resist the temptation to immediately evolve everything you can. Some balls serve as stepping stones to better evolutions. For instance:

  • Sun (Burn + Light) is only an A-tier evolution, but you should create it specifically to later combine with Dark for Black Hole, an S-tier evolution with 3.5x damage multiplier and ultimate crowd control.
  • Save your Bomb evolution to later combine with Poison for Nuclear Bomb (3.0x multiplier).

🎯 Plan Your Path

Plan your evolution path before committing resources. If you're aiming for Satan (4.0x multiplier), you need to create both Incubus (Charm + Dark) and Succubus (Charm + Vampire) first, requiring careful ball management across the run.

Multi-Step Evolutions: Advanced Chains

Ball x Pit's deepest strategic layer involves multi-step evolution chains—sequences where you create one evolution specifically to combine it into an even more powerful form.

⛓️ Two-Step Evolutions

The most common advanced pattern. These require creating one evolution first, then evolving it again:

Nuclear Bomb Chain

  1. 1. Create Bomb (Burn + Iron)
  2. 2. Level Bomb to 3
  3. 3. Evolve Bomb + Poison → Nuclear Bomb (3.0x)

Black Hole Chain

  1. 1. Create Sun (Burn + Light)
  2. 2. Level Sun to 3
  3. 3. Evolve Sun + Dark → Black Hole (3.5x)

🔀 Parallel Evolution Paths

Require creating two separate evolutions before combining them. Satan demands you create Incubus (Charm + Dark) AND Succubus (Charm + Vampire) in the same run, then fuse these two evolutions together. This requires managing four different ball types simultaneously.

Path: (Charm + Dark → Incubus) + (Charm + Vampire → Succubus) → Satan (4.0x)

⚡ Three-Way Fusions (Ultimate Challenge)

Nosferatu requires combining Vampire Lord + Mosquito King + Spider Queen—three separate evolutions that must all be created and leveled to 3 in a single run. The achievement description notes this is "Very difficult" and recommends using The Warrior for faster XP gain to make this achievable.

Requirements: Create 3 separate evolutions, level all to 3, then combine in one run

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Wasting Rainbow Orbs

Don't waste rainbow orbs on weak evolutions. Not all combinations are created equal. Before evolving, check the tier list—S-tier evolutions like Bomb, Magma, Blizzard, and Sandstorm should be prioritized over B-tier combinations.

❌ Ignoring Level Requirements

Both balls must be at Level 3 before the rainbow orb will trigger. Some players try to evolve with Level 2 balls and wonder why nothing happens—there's no shortcut to this requirement.

❌ Breaking Evolution Chains

If you're planning a multi-step evolution like Black Hole, don't accidentally evolve Sun with something else. Once you've used Sun in a different combination, you can't create it again that run. Plan your entire evolution path before collecting any rainbow orbs.

❌ Wrong Character Choice

Don't ignore The Warrior for evolution-heavy runs. If you're attempting Nosferatu, Satan, or trying to get the "Evolution Master" achievement (5 evolutions in one run), The Warrior's rapid XP gain is essential. Other characters simply can't level balls fast enough for complex multi-evolution strategies.
